Everything out of the (brand) box!
The Fairytale Room was founded in 2000. We, .. as 2 sisterinlaw stylists (Ingrid Korteknie & Caroline De Groot) were very surprised in 1999 that the range of toy products in the Benelux was determined by a small number of wholesalers. Having each 2 children in the age between 3 and 5 who like to dress-up it was a hudge gap/niche
For the wholeslers an item was commercial or not commercial and they filled the 2 major toy stores in the Netherlands and surroundings with easy commercial ugly plastic toys.
We saw the best stuff when shopping for our styling work (nice plastic toys) but it was spread all over Europe and not combined in one shop (yet) and we wanted to change that.
We wanted pure kitsch, combined with anthroposophical toys, Hello Kitty, beautiful costumes, fabrics and decorative straps, party items and homemade stuffed animals (who were then still not made!). We knew that this combination, all together exhibited on 1 shelf was unique and breathtaking. Just like how a real toy (Fairytale) shop must be, not all the boxed items stuffed by brand on a shelf. That was of course our daily work as a stylist. It had to be a special experience for the children and (grand)parents. Everything out of the box, to play with.
The Fairytale Room was the first concept store with a mix of (dressed) clothes, gadgets, shoes, movies, decorative trims and Tiroler lace and carefully selected toys .... with fairy tales. The biggest hits were the Spanish red polkadot dancing shoes from Spain and The Sissy Princess dresses from England and our collection polkadot - and checks / gingham items (duvet covers, lamps, cushions, fabric flags) from own workshop.
The fabric traders saw no trading in Polkadot or even Fairytale fabric but we found old fabrics from the 50th with polkadots in Belgium. From that moment we have flooded the Netherlands with dots,ginghams & roses. Dots tableware, dot suitcases , dots plakplastik / adhesive foil (a small revolution in ugly adhesive foil country), dots wrapping paper , dots plastic shopping bags. And not only in the Netherlands but throughout Europe.
In "The Fairytale Room" you could buy anything for a princess room ( or Party) a Knight, or Pirate room or a real Fairytales room. Our beautiful "fancy" stuff filled the pages in the magazines and the Princesses, Knights, Fairytale and Pirates rooms were a fact ...
After some years we said goodbye to this theme polka-fairytale-topic. We got a spottie dottie plastic shopping bag from our local cigarette shop ( with his shop-name on it). I love dots too he said.
We still have a soft spot for spots, especially in combination with gingham and completely with Little Red Riding Hood .. and we know exactly where "it" came from. From our very own silly dreams.
In 2012 we produce everything in our own workshop in Amsterdam from beginning till the end and make Fairytale Wonderland fabric and are fortunately no longer dependent on traders looking for commercial trade. And besides .. our princesses and knights are already 17 and 19 years old!

De Sprookjeskamer is in het jaar 2000 opgericht. Wij,.. als 2 schoonzus stylistes ( Ingrid Korteknie & Caroline De Groot) waren in 1999 erg verbaasd dat het aanbod van speelgoed artikelen in de Benelux werd bepaald door een klein aantal groothandelaren.
Het was handel of geen handel en zij vulden de 2 grote speelgoedzaken in Nederland en omstreken met lelijk plastik speelgoed.
Wij zagen de leukste spullen tijdens het shoppen voor ons styling werk ( mooi plastik speelgoed) maar dat was nog niet in 1 winkel te zien. Wij wilden dat veranderen. Wij wilden pure kitsch, gecombineerd met antroposofisch speelgoed, Hello Kitty, prachtige verkleed kleding, stofjes en sierbandjes, feest artikelen en zelfgemaakte knuffels( die werden toen nog niet gemaakt!) . We wisten dat deze combinatie, tentoongesteld op 1 winkelplank uniek was en adembenemend. Dat was natuurlijk ons dagelijks werk als styliste.
De Sprookjeskamer was de 1e concept store met een mix van (verkleed) kleding, gadgets, schoenen, films, fournituren sierbandjes en kantjes en zorgvuldig uitgezocht speelgoed.... met Sprookjes. De grootste hits waren de Spaanse rood polkadot dans schoentjes uit Spanje en De Sissy prinses jurken uit Engeland en onze verzameling polkadot - en ruitjes / gingham artikelen ( dekbedovertrekken, lampen,kussens, stoffen vlaggen) uit eigen Atelier.
De stofhandelaren zagen geen handel in polkadot stof maar we vonden oude stoffen met polkadots uit Belgie. Vanaf dat moment hebben we Nederland overspoeld met dots en ruitjes. Stippen servies ,stippenkoffers, stippen plakplastik/adhesive foil ( een kleine revolutie in lelijk adhesive foil land), stippen inpakpapier, stippen plastic tasjes. En niet alleen in Nederland maar in heel Europa. In de Sprookjeskamer kon je alles kopen om een prinsessen kamer te maken of een Ridder kamer, of Piraten kamer of een echte Sprookjes kamer .Onze prachtige "hippe" spullen vulden de pagina's in de bladen en de Prinsessen,Ridder en Piraten kamers waren een feit.
We hebben ( bijna) afscheid genomen van dit thema. We kregen een rood plastik tasje met witte stippen van de plaatselijke sigarenboer ( met zijn naam erop). Blokker heeft bijna een hele afdeling roodmetwitestippen. Hema kan er ook niet genoeg van krijgen en winkels als Kruitvat en Etos hebben altijd wel iets met roodwittestippen in huis. Tijd voor verandering!
We hebben nog steeds een zwak voor Stippen, vooral in combinatie met ruitjes en helemaal met Roodkapje ..en we weten precies waar het vandaan kwam. From our very own silly dreams.
We produceren nu in eigen atelier in Amsterdam. Van begin tot het einde. We maken Sprookjesachtige Wonderland stof van schilderijen en zijn gelukkig niet meer afhankelijk van handelaren op zoek naar commerciele handel. En trouwens..onze prinsesjes en ridders zijn nu inmiddels 17 en 19 jaar!
